Demand is Growing for Enterprise Architects

The rate of change in our organizations and corporations has continued its meteoric rise. Uncertainty, the rapid growth in mobile devices, and the massive increases in data have driven dramatic growth in demand for change agents and strategy execution professionals. At the same time, it has become increasingly difficult to hire, train, and support these rare professionals, or even to identify those with the talent, experience, and training needed to deliver real value.

We need an authoritative reference point that any enterprise (public, private, and non-profit) can use to hire and develop Enterprise Architecture related professionals.

FEAPO has responded, but we need your help.

Defining the Career Path for Enterprise Architecture

Following our landmark whitepaper in 2013, Perspectives on Enterprise Architecture, the Federation of EA Professional Organizations (FEAPO) has taken on this critical issue. FEAPO has set out to describe the skills and competencies needed to perform the role of Enterprise Architect and related professions like Information Architect and Security Architect in an integrated way, speaking with a single voice through seventeen international professional organizations representing over 1,000,000 technology professionals worldwide.

The Guide to Careers in Enterprise Architecture is a relatively short document (less than 20 pages) designed to be immediately valuable for mid-career architects, their managers, and their human resources departments. It provides a matrix of skills and competencies for each of the various “domains” of Enterprise Architecture: Enterprise Architect, Business Architect, Information Architect, Application Architect, Technology Architect and Security Architect as well as Architecture Manager.

So Why Host a Summit?

For the first time, we will have a document in front of us. Right now, in the winter of 2015, the document is being constructed from contributions from numerous international organizations. However, if history is our teacher, we know that our first effort will need the collective minds of a couple dozen folks, in a collaborative space, combing through the document, correcting mistakes, clarifying the text, and adding contributions. Inevitably, the document will get shorter, sharper, and more valuable because we put it through the crucible of a summit.

For FEAPO member organizations, attendance by a delegate is critical. Each of our members brings a unique and valuable perspective on the role of Enterprise Architecture and the skills needed to perform the role correctly. Without attendance at the summit, your voice cannot be heard and the resulting document may not strongly represent your perspective.

If you are ready to make your reservations, check out further details below.

We need your help

We need two kinds of help to make this work. We need a handful of corporate sponsors, and we need FEAPO member organizations to send individual contributors. Both are critical to the success of this effort.

For individual professionals to contribute to this effort, you must be a member of one of the seventeen membership organizations that make up FEAPO. If you are not a member, but you want to contribute anyway, join one. (Typically membership in these organizations is inexpensive and highly valuable on their own). Once you are a member of a FEAPO organization, contact FEAPO on our website. We will get you involved.

Sponsors

Corporate and Educational sponsors play an important role in supporting our work and we value their contributions. In exchange for your modest financial contribution, corporate sponsors can:

  • Send up to two representatives to the summit as contributors
  • Influence the direction, content, and structure of this important guide
  • Leverage your contribution to the career path for Enterprise Architecture in your sales and marketing materials
  • The names of sponsors and the contributors that you send will be included on the final document. This is especially important for academic sponsors.

Take the next step

Contact FEAPO president Brian Cameron (bcameron@smeal.psu.edu) or FEAPO EVP Nick Malik (nick@nickmalik.com) for more information or to join forces with FEAPO in this important effort.

A Very Successful Fall Plenum 2013

Posted by on Nov 1, 2013 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

As all of you know, we just concluded the FEAPO Fall Plenary 2013 and once again, we had an absolutely fantastic meeting and I continue to be amazed at (and proud of) the contributions that all of you made to (and during) the event and our direction as an EA organization going forward.

On behalf of the FEAPO Board of Directors and Officers, I want to thank all of you for attending, participating, and/or presenting at the Plenary. The presentations represent a lot of thought and hard work by all of you, and I always come away from these events with a constantly growing feeling that collectively, our organization is going to have a very significant impact on the EA profession, and there is much evidence that we are already doing so.

All of the artifacts from the Plenary will remain on our collaboration website indefinitely. If you do not currently have access to the site, please let Andy Chen or me know and we’ll get your access started.

The Board and Officers are also very interested in your comments about the event: the good, bad, or in between. Your valuable feedback assists us in planning and executing future events so we keep our expertise, momentum, and work products strongly influencing the future of the EA profession. Please feel free to send Brian and/or me email with your thoughts. Finally, while I think I got the list of all participants (in-person and dialed-in) correct, please advise and I will forward this message to them.

What a great 2 days we had, and as always, thank you for all that you do for FEAPO!

Best regards,

Bob (“The Cake Guy”) McIlree

Monthly Recap

Worldwide Summit on the Enterprise Architecture Profession

The Worldwide Summit on the Enterprise Architecture Profession was held on May 2 and 3, 2013 at State College, Pennsylvania with over 20 individuals in attendance for the two day session.

Delegates from the FEAPO member organizations, representatives from the external advisors (Gartner, Forrester, and Cutter) as well as individuals from sponsors EMC and Troux were in attendance.

The Summit was a major inflection point as an organization and attendees expressed their praise for the productive nature of the session and the collaborative activities that were conducted.  Many saw this as a key step in FEAPO being recognized as the accrediting body for this profession and a major factor in the evolution of the profession over time.

The work that started at the Summit will continue with another session on August 21 and 22 2013 to finalize the EA profession paper.

In the addition, it was announced that the Fall Plenary will be held in November.

Bylaw Changes

Since November 2012, Bylaw amendments relating to incorporation, finances, a new Treasurer position, voting processes, and Council, Board and Officer responsibilities and authorities have bee adopted.

With a vote taken during the FEAPO business meeting at the Spring Summit in State College, PA and via email for FMO Delegates who couldn’t participate in the Summit, additional Bylaw changes have been approved.  These changes related to a new category of participation for non-profits that are not EA-oriented but have an interest in FEAPO’s EA concerns. To make this category  fit the existing designation scheme, the current Affiliate is renamed Champion and a new Affiliate is created with more limited engagement opportunities.

The current bylaws are posted on the FEAPO website.

Monthly Recap

FEAPO Member Organization’s Summit on the Enterprise Architecture Profession

The FEAPO Member Organization’s Summit on the Enterprise Architecture Profession will be held on May 2 and 3, 2013 at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in State College, PA.   This Summit is the first major step in showing the world that the entire FEAPO member organizations can come together and agree on issues needed to evolve the EA profession.

The Summit is open to the delegates from each of the nineteen member organizations, both US based and international organizations.

The key focus of the Summit will be a discussion on two papers recently drafted by FEAPO working groups – the EA Perspective Paper and the EA Career path document.  Both of these papers have been circulated to the FEAPO member organizations for review, comment, revision, and compilation into a draft for presentation at the conference.  More detail on each of these papers in included in this newsletter below.

The intended outcome of the summit is to have all FEAPO member organizations feel comfortable enough with the draft paper to vote to approve it as a first step in a continuing process of evolving and refining versions in the years to come.

Membership Update

FEAPO continues to attract international interest with the approval of the Netherlands Architecture Forum (NAF) as its newest member in October 2012. The Netherlands Architecture Forum is the third international organization that has membership in FEAPO, joining the Australian Computer Society and the Institute of Information Technology Professionals New Zealand who are already members.

The NAF is an organization of companies and knowledge institutes, such as universities, that aim to foster the use of architecture and to improve the level of the architecture profession in business and information technology (IT). The NAF is vendor-neutral and a supporter of open standards and an open exchange of knowledge. Its main activities include holding working groups on architecture-related issues, organizing seminars and the Dutch national congress on architecture.

The FEAPO membership increases to 18 organizations with the addition of the NAF.

EA Perspectives White Paper

The focus of this paper is to provide a unified perspective of Enterprise Architecture to a wide ranging audience, not just to the architects themselves, but also to the people who interact with the architects, and others who want to learn about Enterprise Architecture.  After producing a vision for the paper, a small working team created an online survey, and requested participation from each of the FEAPO member organizations.   The goal of the survey was to capture each organizations perspective in a number of areas of Enterprise Architecture and compare the similarities and differences.

The results of the survey were compiled, synthesized, discussed and distilled into a first draft of this paper.  So much data was gathered from this survey that it was decided to develop a series of papers on the Enterprise Architecture profession that will progressively dive deeper into different aspect of this evolving field. This paper is the first of this planned series.

The paper was organized around the major themes or question areas that the survey attempted to understand.   The three major themes or sections of the paper are:

  • What is Enterprise Architecture?
  • What differentiates the Enterprise Architecture practice from other functions and practices in an organization?
  • What value does Enterprise Architecture bring to an organization?

EA Career Path Document

In the Spring of 2012, at the urging of many of its members, agreed to undertake a multi-year effort to:

  1. Conduct an analysis of the current state of the structure of the Enterprise Architecture practice and the structure of career paths related to the traditional EA practice areas.
  2. Based on the results of the current state analysis, develop competency sets and role descriptions for the identified career path structures.
  3. Develop possible future career path structures needed as the profession evolves.
  4. Submit the artifacts and documents from this initiative to the FEAPO Council of Delegates for approval.

This document will focus on the results of the first step in this process (item 1 above) and discusses the findings from a meta-analysis of the EA career path documents from ten organizations and well as two analyst studies on EA career paths
